My friend and former colleague Cathy Bereznicki, who has died aged 62 following heart surgery, was a champion of opportunities for young people. A leader and creative thinker in careers guidance, she combined teaching skills and strategic policy-making with a determination to ensure the best start in working life for all the young people she encountered.
She was born in Wick, Caithness, the daughter of Robert and Sheila More, and came from a long line of fishermen and women. She studied social sciences at Edinburgh University, graduating in 1974. Cathy worked for the Crown Estate Commissioners in Edinburgh before joining the Inner London Education Authority in the 1980s, as a careers adviser and later principal careers officer for Hammersmith and Fulham.
